چکیده

In many environmental transport problems, organic solutes partition between immiscible phases that consist of liquid mixtures. To estimate the corresponding partition coefficients, we evaluated the efficacy of combining linear solvation energy relationships (LSERs) developed for pure 1:1 systems via application of linear solvent strength theory. In this way, existing LSERs could be extended to treat solute partitioning from gasoline, diesel fuel, and similar mixtures into contacting aqueous mixtures. Unlike other approaches, this method allowed prediction of liquid-liquid partition coefficients in a variety of fuel-water systems for a broad range of dilute solutes. When applied to 37 polar and nonpolar solutes partitioning between an aqueous mixture and 12 different fuel-like mixtures (many including oxygenates), the root-mean-squared error was a factor of approximately 2.5 in the partition coefficient. This was considerably more accurate than application of Raoult's law for the same set of systems. Regulators and scientists could use this method to estimate fuel-water partition coefficients of novel additives in future fuel formulations and thereby provide key inputs for environmental transport assessments of these compounds.

Application of Electrochemistry to Determination of Transfer Gibbs Energies and Autoprotolysis Constants for Aqueous Mixtures of Dimethyl Sulfoxide

A practical potentiometric method was applied successfully to experimental electrochemical data in order to determine the autoprotolysis constants (pKap) of water + dimethyl sulfoxide mixtures containing 0-90 % of DMSO by volume at 25° C and 0.1 M ionic strength was maintained in each mixture by NaClO4 solution. The results indicated that water-DMSO mixtures are more basic media than pure water...

APPLIED CHEMISTRY Some Novel Liquid Partitioning Systems: Water-Ionic Liquids and Aqueous Biphasic Systems

Partition coefficients, as values of log P, between water and two room-temperature ionic liquids and between water and an aqueous biphasic system have been correlated with Abraham’s solute descriptors to yield linear free energy relationships that can be used to predict further values of log P, to ascertain the solute properties that lead to increased or decreased log P values, and to character...

A generalized G-SFED continuum solvation free energy calculation model.

An empirical continuum solvation model, solvation free energy density (SFED), has been developed to calculate solvation free energies of a molecule in the most frequently used solvents. A generalized version of the SFED model, generalized-SFED (G-SFED), is proposed here to calculate molecular solvation free energies in virtually any solvent. G-SFED provides an accurate and fast generalized fram...

Spectroscopic Study of Solvent Effects on the Electronic Absorption Spectra of Flavone and 7-Hydroxyflavone in Neat and Binary Solvent Mixtures

The solvatochromic characteristics of flavone and 7-hydroxyflavone were investigated in neat and binary solvent mixtures. The spectral shifts of these solutes were correlated with the Kamlet and Taft parameters (α, β and π*) using linear solvation energy relationships. The multiparametric analysis indicates that both specific hydrogen bond donor ability and non-specific dipolar interactions of ...

Prediction of Satranidazole Solubility in Water-Polyethylene Glycol 400 Mixtures Using Extended Hildebrand Solubility Approach

The Extended Hildebrand Solubility Parameter Approach (EHSA) is used to estimate the solubility of satranidazole in binary solvent systems. The solubility of satranidazole in various water-PEG 400 mixtures was analyzed in terms of solute-solvent interactions using a modified version of Hildebrand-Scatchard treatment for regular solutions. The solubility equation employs term interaction ...
